How it's made - The 3D printing handbook

This book was made to help engineers unlock the potential of 3D printing for professional applications and to demystify the industry as whole.

Written by George Fisher-Wilson

It's been 4 years since the inception of Protolabs Network and a lot has changed in the 3D printing industry.

Starting with our Knowledge Base we began creating a place for engineers and designers to learn about the potential of 3D printing. As the knowledge base grew to over 50 articles, we got feedback from its users and began to realise there wasn’t a book out there that they could turn to get similar advice. For other manufacturing technologies such as CNC machining there are a wide range of books full of great actionable content. This need for more clarity and one resource was felt across many industries, and has led to the creation of our first book, The 3D Printing Handbook.

This book was made to help engineers unlock the potential of 3D printing for professional applications and to demystify the industry as whole. Working with a range of academics and industry experts, we've democratised their expert knowledge to anyone picking up the book.

In 3 Parts, over 20 chapters, we lay out the mechanisms behind all major 3D printing technologies, discuss their benefits and limitations, introduce actionable design rules and summarise all key takeaways with simple decision making tools. It is designed to read unlike any other engineering book, full of easy-to-understand diagrams and inspiring visuals. This book is not meant to be read from front to back. Instead, several features have been included to quickly help the reader find the information they’re looking for.
